WHO Confronts Major Workforce Reduction Following United States Funding Withdrawal
This international health organization disclosed intentions to cut its workforce by nearly a fourth – amounting to over two thousand jobs – by mid-2026.
Financial Crisis Prompts Substantial Restructuring
This decision comes following the United States, formerly the organization's largest donor, withdrew financial support earlier this period.
The US government had been responsible for about eighteen percent of the agency's overall funding, causing a substantial financial shortfall.
Expected Workforce Cuts
According to organizational estimates, the staff will decrease from nine thousand four hundred and one posts in January 2025 to approximately seven thousand and thirty by mid-2026.
This decrease of two thousand three hundred and seventy-one posts comprises job cuts, employees retiring, and natural departures.
"This year has been among the most difficult in WHO's history, while we undertook a challenging but necessary process of prioritisation and realignment," stated the organization's leader.
Budget Shortfall Persists
This Switzerland-headquartered body currently faces a budget shortfall of 1.06 billion dollars for the 2026-2027 biennium, amounting to nearly a fourth of its total funding.
This figure marks an reduction from a previous estimated gap of 1.7 billion dollars reported in May.
Not Included Funding
These budget projections do not include an additional 1.1 billion dollars in expected contributions from current discussions with multiple contributors.
The representative for the organization noted that the present unfunded part of the biennial budget is actually smaller than in previous years, crediting this to several reasons:
- A smaller overall budget
- Initiation of a new fundraising campaign
- An increase in member states' required contributions
The restructuring process is currently approaching its completion, paving the way for the organization to move forward with a reshaped operational model.
