For those living nearby, Jihad al-Shamie seemed to lead a largely unremarkable daily routine: a recent parent who engaged in weight training and parked his car inconsiderately near the home he resided alongside his mother and father.

As the child of a medical specialist, Shamie appeared to enjoy a happy childhood, with siblings who were younger who went on to have successful careers in technology and pharmacology.

Yet following the fatal shooting after carrying out a lethal assault targeting Jewish worshippers, a more complete understanding has been revealed. Authorities discovered that Shamie was already a bankrupt, found guilty of minor offenses and an suspected in a rape case when he assaulted worshippers marking Yom Kippur.

A Normal Childhood

Jihad al-Shamie seemed to experience a normal childhood in Manchester during the nineties. In home videos made for his elder relative overseas, he cuddles a cat in the rear yard, telling his father he wishes to give it food; in another he assists his younger brother on a playground equipment in the yard.

Shamie grew up with siblings following him, the family enjoying days out to entertainment venue, wildlife attraction and the shopping complex, and the siblings were involved in holiday theatrical productions at Christmas.

Where they once lived, across from the medical facility where Shamie’s father previously worked, local residents recalled a “ordinary kid” who was member of a “respectable home”.

He would play well with other children on the neighborhood, and the single odd behavior a neighbor mentioned was that he passed much of his time playing on a handheld computer game – to the point that it caused excessive blinking.

“The family seemed fine, the dad had employment nearby, he appeared pleasant enough, regularly conversed with me. The household appeared respectable, the mom often talked with neighbors. He used to play on a game, he would spend entire days playing, he used to blink a lot.”

‘A Typical Individual’

Those residing near his home in Prestwich portrayed him as a “uncomplicated, average person” who would frequently work out in his outdoor space, practicing strength training, with someone noting he frequently positioned his vehicle poorly in front of her home.

The family are believed to have moved to the attached residence, roughly two miles distant from the scene of the attack, around a decade and a half prior, when Shamie was nearing twenty years old. During the siblings' childhood, the relatives made their home in the neighboring district.

Son of a Trauma Surgeon

His dad, Faraj al-Shamie, worked globally as a trauma surgeon, practicing in dangerous regions worldwide, including in Iraq, Afghanistan and South Sudan. He previously worked for NGOs, such as the Red Cross international branch, and studied under renowned surgeon David Nott in the Mosul municipality within Iraq.

Relative's Declaration

Faraj al-Shamie has dissociated the household from his son’s attack, posting a declaration online that stated: “Information coming from the Manchester area about the assault aimed at a Jewish place of worship has been a profound shock to us.

“The household members both domestically and internationally vehemently denounces this horrific action, which was aimed at harmless, non-combatant individuals. We entirely dissociate our family from this attack and express our deep shock and sorrow regarding these events. We extend our sympathy to the victims and their families, and we pray for their strength and comfort.”

Private Situation

Shamie had previously worked as a tutor, teaching English and computer programming. Yet, records showed him jobless in state bankruptcy files which showed he turned to a debt relief order last September while residing with his parents. Just one month later, his father posted a picture of him with a recently born child, labeling the image “Excellent Addition to the Family”.

Criminal Past

Authorities disclosed that Shamie was on police bail for rape when he steered his modest automobile into worshippers at Heaton Park shul. The exact date is uncertain the reported incident took place but it is believed to have occurred recently. He was being thoroughly examined by local law enforcement.

He had faced legal issues previously, as per informants, who mentioned his previous convictions for additional minor violations. He was however not tracked by anti-terrorism units or security services before the incident.

Extremist Development

In the hours since the attack, investigators have been pulling apart all aspects of his background to understand who, or what, delivered him on the journey toward violence. This involves reviewing communication data, checking the names of friends or associates, and examining his internet history.

He appears to have been fixated on the challenges affecting Muslim populations in certain Middle Eastern regions, particularly in recent years in Gaza. An online presence, believed to belong to Shamie has a machinegun as its profile picture, paired with botanical elements, and what appears to be a copy of the Qur’an.

One entry on the inactive social media profile mentions the Manbij explosion in Syria in 2016, and requests heavenly intervention to “oppose individuals who harmed and murdered them.”
