I Am Called MUFC: The Die-Hard Supporter Who Battled to Change His Name

Pose the question to any United devotee who is older concerning the significance of May 26th, 1999, and they'll recount that the date was life-altering. It was the night when dramatic late goals from Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjær completed an stunning late turnaround in the showpiece event against Bayern Munich at the famous Barcelona stadium. Simultaneously, the life of one United fan in Bulgaria, who recently died at the 62 years old, took a new direction.

Aspirations Under Communism

That supporter was born Marin Zdravkov Levidzhov in Svishtov, a settlement with a population of 22,000. Growing up in communist Bulgaria with a devotion to football, he aspired to legally altering his identity to… Manchester United. However, to take the name of a football club from the other side of the Iron Curtain was mission impossible. Had Marin tried to do so before the fall of the regime, he would almost certainly have ended up in jail.

A Promise Forged in Drama

Many seasons after the fall of the regime in Bulgaria – on that night in May 1999 – Marin's personal goal came one step closer to reality. Watching the final from his modest home in Svishtov and with United trailing, Marin vowed to himself: in the event of a reversal, he would go to any lengths to become known as that of the club he loved. Then, a miracle occurred.

The Long Legal Battle

The next day, Marin sought legal counsel to express his unusual request, thus initiating a difficult fight. Marin’s father, from whom he had gained his fandom, was no longer alive, and the man in his thirties was caring for his parent, working all kinds of odd jobs, including as a laborer on a meager daily wage. He was barely getting by, yet his goal turned into a fixation. He quickly turned into the local celebrity, then was featured globally, but 15 years full of court cases and discouraging rulings lay ahead.

Trademark Issues and Limited Success

His request was denied early on for intellectual property issues: he was not permitted to adopt the name of a world-famous brand. Then a presiding magistrate ruled partially in his favour, saying Marin could alter his given name to the city name but that he was could not adopt the second part as his family name. “But I don’t want to be named after a city in England, I want to carry the title of my cherished club,” Marin informed the judge. The battle persisted.

A Life with Feline Friends

During breaks from litigation, he was often tending to his pets. He had plenty of them in his back yard in Svishtov and cherished them equally with the Manchester United. He gave each one a name after team stars: including Ferdinand and Rooney, they were the most famous cats in town. Who was his preferred pet of Man U? The feline known as Beckham.

Progress and Integrity

Another victory was secured in court: he was allowed to add the club name as an recognized alias on his personal papers. But this did not satisfy him. “I will continue until my full name is Manchester United,” he vowed. His narrative resulted in business offers – a proposal to have club products branded with his legal name – but although he was in need, he declined the proposal because he was unwilling to gain financially from his adored institution. The club's identity was sacred to him.

Goals Achieved and Enduring Symbols

His story was captured in that year. The crew turned Marin’s dream of visiting Old Trafford and there he even met Dimitar Berbatov, the forward then at the club at the time.

He inked the United crest on his forehead at a later date as a demonstration against the judicial outcomes and in his closing chapter it became increasingly hard for him to continue his legal battle. Employment was hard to find and he lost his mother to Covid-19. But somehow, he found a way. Born as a Catholic, he got baptised in an religious institution under the name Manchester United Zdravkov Levidzhov. “In the eyes of the divine, I am with my chosen name,” he would frequently remark.

On a recent Monday, his heart stopped beating. Perhaps now Manchester United’s determined supporter could achieve eternal tranquility.
