Chinese Figure Skaters Face Probe Following Displaying Prop Weapon during Competition

The International Skating Union have launched an investigation following two Chinese figure skaters appeared with an object resembling a toy ballistic missile at a grand prix figure skating event.

Television video showed Ren Junfei and Xing Jianing waiting with a large toy shaped like a missile marked “DF-61” while waiting for the judges' results in the “kiss and cry” zone during the event.

This model represents a new Chinese-made ground-launched intercontinental ballistic missile capable of transporting atomic warheads, which was displayed at a military parade last month.

“The ISU have acknowledged that an inappropriate plush item appears to have been among those tossed onto the rink by spectators following a routine during the competition,” the organization commented in an emailed statement.

The item was then held by the skaters after their performance. The ISU apologizes for this occurrence and will investigate further.”

Ren and Xing finished in eighth place of 10 pairs in the ice dance event, which was won by Madison Chock and Evan Bates from the US.
